*Jan 2021 Update – the Startups to Watch List for 2021 is now available on this link!*

2018 was an exciting year for age tech, we’ve had exits and unicorns. Which age tech startups are worth following in 2019?

Nesterly

Home sharing and co-living are gaining popularity in recent years. Most co-living platforms target young individuals who like the convenience of living in a place that provides much more than just a roof over their heads. Nesterly entered that competitive space with an innovative solution – match seniors who live alone and have extra space, with young adults who are looking for affordable housing. It’s a win-win solution.

GrownUp

An online platform that matches older adults as mentors to young adults seeking guidance in life. This bootstrapping startup showcased it’s app on TechCrunch disrupt in September and is expected to launch soon.

SoundMind

Soundmind brings conversational A.I. into senior living communities. They use Amazon’s Alexa to help senior care staff improve communication with residents. After receiving seed funding in early 2019, it remains to be seen which senior living facilities will embrace this simple and elegant solution.

Papa Technologies

Papa is an online platform that connects College Students to Senior Citizens who need transportation, house help, technology lessons, companionship, and other senior services. The company started in 2017, raised significant funds in 2018 which can support its growth efforts and help it reach more seniors.

Tomorrow Ideas

The world’s first ground up mobile app to integrate a legal will, trust and life insurance into a single, easy to use experience.

Older adults are an obvious market for this app, now that almost every boomer owns a smartphone.

Leeo

another startup that’s been around for a while. These Connected home innovators raised $3M last November ($40M total), and won the “best of innovation” award at 2019 CES.

Why are they worth following in 2019? They’re offering a new approach to wellness monitoring. Leeo Ping allows you to create a trusted circle of family and friends, with whom you can share presence, activity, health, environment or frequent places, whatever’s right for you. If something seems wrong the app will alert friends, family or professional caregivers.

Intuition Robotics

Intuition Robotics is the startup behind ElliQ, the sidekick for happier aging. The company announced during CES that the much anticipated social robot is now available for pre-order. It also announced the launch of “platform Q”, a cognitive AI platform that will enable 3rd parties to breathe life into their own hardware (Full disclosure: I work for Intuition Robotics).
